ABOUT BRIDGE

The game of Bridge is played with four people sitting at a card table drinking wine and trashing politicians. The four are paired in teams with team members sitting across from each other. Likely the game derives it's name from the fact that team members need to communicate with each other through the language of cards.

THE PARTS OF BRIDGE

DEALING - BIDDING - PLAYING THE HAND - SCORING
Bridge starts with the dealer dealing out all of the cards such that each player has 13 in their hand. Players sort their hands according to rank and suit and then the bidding phase of the game starts with the dealer. After the dealer the bid moves to the left with everyone getting a chance to bid. After bidding the hand is played with each player discarding one card face up per trick. There are 13 tricks in the game. Once the game is complete the game is scored based on the bidding contract.

THE BIDDING PHASE

Often considered the most complicated part of the game the object of bidding is to determine the contract, who takes the contract and which suit, if any, will be trump. If a player bids 2 hearts that is a claim that their team will take at least 8 tricks if the trump suit is hearts. In bidding the suits are ranked such that clubs are the lowest and spades the highest. Thus if the previous player bid 1 heart, the next bidder must go to the 2 level if they want to bid clubs or diamonds. There is an option of no trump (NT) which is higher than spades.

THE TRICK TAKING PHASE

Once the bidding is over and the contract decided the playing of the hand can begin. The player to the left of the bidder (person who won the contract) leads and everyone must follow suit (if possible) with the highest rank winning the trick. The partner of the bidder is known as the dummy and that hand is laid on the table after the first card is thrown. The bidder plays both her and the dummy hand. The winning player leads the next round. The trump suit will always beat the other suits. If it is a no trump hand the lead suit wins.
